This application, Sound Meter: SPL & noise meter, is a completely free tool that can measure the sound levels in your surroundings. In today’s world, noise pollution is a significant issue. By knowing the level of noise pollution in your environment, you can make informed decisions about your living space and take measures to protect your ears.
MEASURING SOUND STRENGTH
This app utilizes the microphone on your mobile device to capture sound and analyze the intensity of the noise in your surroundings, specifically in the area closest to the microphone. The unit of measurement for noise intensity is Decibels (dB).
WARNING FOR NOISE LEVELS
The app allows you to take sound measurements over a period of time. It then calculates and displays the minimum, maximum, and average noise levels during the measurement. If the sound levels exceed the allowable limit for human ears, the app will issue a warning.
RECORDING SOUND VARIATIONS
The information about the sound levels during the measurement will be shown on a graph, with a histogram displaying the sound intensity for each time period. This allows you to see any variations in the sound levels from the beginning to the end of the measurement.
DETAILS
After measuring the noise in your environment, the app provides a reference chart of noise levels for common sounds, such as breathing (10dB), clock ticking (20dB), and louder sounds like a motorbike (90dB) or a subway (100dB). It also includes a few extreme examples, such as gunfire at 140dB.
HISTORY UPDATES
Sound Meter keeps a record of your sound measurements, including the date, time, and specific noise level information. This allows for an objective comparison between different environments.
FLEXIBLE USER SUPPORT
The app is easy to use, with a day-night mode that makes it comfortable to use at any time without straining your eyes. It also has low storage requirements, making it suitable for all devices.
IMPORTANT NOTES
While the sound readings from this app may not be as precise as those from specialized sound meters, they can still provide useful information. Keep in mind that the accuracy may be affected by factors such as the phone’s microphone or how the device is positioned during the measurement.
