In the latest installment of The King of Fighters (KOF) games, each team now consists of four players instead of the previous three-character teams. Before each match, players must choose three characters to fight with, and a fourth member, known as the Striker, can be summoned during battle to assist with special moves. However, the Striker can only be summoned a limited number of times per match, which is determined by the number of ’Strike Bombs’ displayed on the screen.

The game has eliminated the Advanced and Extra combat styles from The King of Fighters ’98 and instead offers a single playing style based on the Advanced mode. Similar to the previous game, players can fill their power bar by attacking their opponents or completing special actions. However, this time they can choose between two powered-up states during battle, depending on the button combination used.

The Counter Mode increases the player’s offensive power and allows them to use their character’s Super Special Move indefinitely. They can also perform a ’Super Cancellation Attack’ or a ’Moving Attack’ to transition from a Special Move to a Super Special Move in a combo. On the other hand, the Armor Mode boosts the character’s defensive strength, allowing them to withstand more damage from their opponents. However, in this mode, players cannot use Super Special Moves.

At the end of each match, players are assigned a score based on their performance. If they achieve a high score, they will be rewarded with an additional fight after the final boss in arcade mode. The updated version of The King of Fighters: Evolution also introduces three new stages and two new characters who can only be used as Strikers.

Some of the new Strikers include Kyo Kusanagi in a different attire, Athena Asamiya in her school uniform, Goro Daimon, Billy Kane, Ryuji Yamazaki, Chizuru Kagura, Syo Kirishima, Alfred Airhawk, Vanessa, Seth, Fiolina Germi, and Gai Tendo. The game is also compatible with The King of Fighters: Battle de Paradise for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Points earned in Battle de Paradise can be transferred to The King of Fighters ’99: Evolution to help level up the Extra Strikers faster.
